Jerry Lewis has died.
The legendary American entertainer died on Sunday (August 20) at the age of 91 in his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. His family revealed this in an official statement. The actor is said to have died of natural causes and spent his last hours with his family.
The star, whose real name was Jerome Levitch, became famous alongside singer Dean Martin in the 1950s. Together they formed the comedy duo Martin and Lewis. The two stood in front of the camera for 16 films together, including 'Der Prügelknabe' (1952), 'Schrecken der Division' (1952) and 'Der sympathische Hochstapler' (1954). Afterwards Lewis pursued his solo career while working as a producer, actor, screenwriter and director. His film comedy 'The Mad Professor' from 1963, which is a parody of the classic 'Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hide 'represents. In 2005 he was honored with a golden camera for his life's work. However, Lewis's life was always on the brink - he already suffered a heart attack in 1982, later he had to fight prostate cancer.
Numerous celebrities paid tribute to him on social networks. Jamie Lee Curtis tweeted: "Jerry Lewis was very present in my family. Many films with my mom & he made films with Janet and Tony. He made me and many others laugh." Jim Carrey said, "This fool wasn't an idiot. Jerry Lewis was an undeniable genius, an incredible blessing, the pinnacle of comedy!"
