"The new-generation intrauterine devices (IUDs) do not have much in common with those of twenty years ago," says gynecologist Sylvain Mimoun. But they still suffer from a lot of misconceptions. Even among doctors! Many fear that they cause repetitive infections or ectopic pregnancies, but studies show that this is not the case.

In fact, the complications are exceptional, if the indications are well respected.

An alternative to the morning after pill

Copper-bearing IUDs have a dual benefit: they do not release hormones into the body and can be used as an emergency contraceptive for unprotected sex until at least five days later.

Although known for a long time, this post-coital use is actually not widespread since its success rate remains controversial. This time is now over. The British Health Services ( National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence ) have indeed reviewed a lot of data on the subject. Their conclusion confirms its quai-total effectiveness (99.85%), better than the morning-after pill.

The IUD, not just for mothers

IUDs have other advantages. Once laid, even in emergency, they can be kept as a contraceptive for at least 5 years. No more risks of forgetfulness of the pill, which generate many unwanted pregnancies: one out of two according to the gynecologists of the faculty of medicine of Washington . And contrary to popular beliefs still tenacious, they are very suitable for nulliparas.

Short models specifically adapted to the morphology of young girls exist today. The World Health Organization (WHO) even states that their pose can be performed in children under 20 years. Only downside: it can increase the duration and volume of the rules . And of course, like the pill, they do not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
