This barometer published twice a year on a sample of 1000 people shows that 91% of respondents have read at least one book this year. By 2015, the average number of books read by the French was 16, while it peaks at 20 pounds a year today. Women draw this average upwards because they read an average of 22 pounds per year and 93% of them consider themselves to be a major reader, compared with 89% of males.
The progression of digital
We must surely progress to e-books that attract more and more French. They were 19% in 2015 to use it and are 24% in 2017. Forums and social networks also draw their attention by encouraging consumers. With 2850 subscribers, the Twitter account "@FridayLevel" is the proof, not to mention the hashtag that returns in power every Friday: #Friday Read.
The novel still has the wind in its sails
The majority would be addicted to novels, since it is the genre of the novel that remains popular with a large majority of French (69%), followed by practical books (59%) and comics (48%).
Reading: A Recreational Pleasure
Many French say that if they had one more day to give to leisure, it would be dedicated to reading. This hobby is the second most popular leisure time after going out with friends.
Although French women are very good readers, they sometimes avoid bookshops by thinking that the prices charged are more important. But since 2010, the points of sale practice the price at a single price. So there's no reason to worry!
