Brighton striker Tomer Hemed has the ability to lead the line this season, according to manager Chris Hughton.

The Seagulls have yet to score in their first three Premier League games and Hughton had been hoping to bolster the club's attacking options.

On deadline day, the former Newcastle United boss pushed for several deals, with Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen his top target.

A move for the Dutchman never came off, while Hemed was linked with Leeds United, Derby County and Reading.

Injuries to Glenn Murray, Sam Baldock and Izzy Brown now mean Hemed will lead the line and Hughton has backed him to deliver.

"He will have the same response as he always has," Hughton told reporters.

"Tomer is a very genuine individual. He really enjoys being here and really enjoys being a Premier League player. He has always worked hard for this club and he will continue to do so.

"The one thing about speculation is that the players all hear it. Sometimes the players know more than we do!

"There aren't too many secrets and ultimately everybody just has to get on with it."
