Zach Johnson says he is ready to win at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational after spurning a great title chance last month.

The two-time major winner was in contention for the John Deere Classic in July going into the final day's play but struggled to cope with the nerves as he slipped down the field to finish in a tie for fifth.

Missing out on victory was hard for the American to take but he has a great chance of redemption after moving into a share of the lead at the Bridgestone Invitational with just 18 holes to play.

The 41-year-old mixed eight birdies and three bogeys on Saturday to sign for a five-under-par 65 and reach -9, jumping to the top of the leaderboard alongside Belgian Thomas Pieters.

Johnson is eager to keep his impressive form going and pick up a first title since winning the 2015 Open Championship.

"I was ready when I signed my scorecard on 18 that day," he told pgatour.com. "I had nerves, unfortunately I probably saw the board a little too early and had nerves around that 13, 14, and it kind of caught up with me. Since I signed my scorecard, I've been ready for this.

"Not suggesting it's going to happen, you know, still too many holes, but I'm anxious for the opportunity is really what it comes down to."

Australian Scott Hend is in sole possession of third on -8 after a magnificent seven-under-par 63 while Japan's Hideki Matsuyama is a further stroke back.

Canada's Adam Hadwin, American Charley Hoffman and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy are in a three-way tie for fifth on -6, one shot better than Scotland's Russel Knox in eighth.
