Phil Mickelson says he is looking forward to representing the United States after being named as a wildcard for the Presidents Cup.
The 12th edition of the competition will be staged at Liberty National Golf Club from September 28 – October 1 and Team USA will be aiming for a seventh outright victory, having made it six in a row in South Korea two years ago.
Steve Stricker, who is a five-time Presidents Cup winner, has been named captain this year and he made the decision to pick Charley Hoffman, who only just missed out on an automatic position, and Mickelson as his two wildcards.
Four of the American side are currently ranked in the top-10 of the world, those being Dustin Johnson (1), Jordan Spieth (2) Justin Thomas (4) and Rickie Fowler (10), whilst the remaining six automatic qualifiers, who are Daniel Berger, Brooks Koepka, Kevin Kisner, Patrick Reed, Matt Kuchar and Kevin Chappell, are in the top-30.
Stricker's team is looking ominously strong and five-time Major winner Mickelson is delighted he has been provided the opportunity to play, ensuring his run of competing in every Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup since 1994 continues.
"My excitement to be on this team is as great as it's been for any team I've been on," he said. "It means a lot to me. What means a lot to me this year is that they wanted me there even though I didn’t get the spot on my own. I really love being around these guys. I respect how great they are. This is a special team and to be a part of it is very meaningful to me.
"We can't be complacent. If we play our best and are prepared I believe we'll come out on top. But they are an incredibly talented team and if we take some things for granted we'll get beat."
The International Team, whose only victory came in 1998, are made up of Hideki Matsuyama, Jason Day, Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen, Marc Leishman, Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace, Kim Si-woo, Jhonattan Vegas, Adam Hadwin and the two wildcards Anirban Lahiri and Emiliano Grillo.
