'The Bachelor' couple Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi were a "mismatch from the start".

The 36-year-old hunk and his bride-to-be Vanessa Grimaldi announced their decision to end their engagement on Friday (25.08.17), just five months after Nick popped the question to the special education teacher on the finale of popular ABC show.

And a source has now claimed their friends never believed the relationship would last because their personalities are so different, and insists the split wasn't "an overnight decision."

They told People magazine: "Their friends knew the relationship wouldn't last. It was a mismatch from the start. She's super fun, bubbly and outgoing and he's more of a serious personality and more introverted. She would try to bring him out of his shell, but he's just not as comfortable in big groups. It wasn't an overnight decision, and they're amicable."

The source adds there was "no real drama" that brought the couple to break off their engagement, and the relationship just ran its course.

They added: "The relationship just wasn't working, and it wasn't what it needed to be for them to get married. There honestly wasn't a last straw or any real drama."

The couple announced their split via a joint statement in which they insisted they still have "love and admiration" for each other.

They said: "It's with a great amount of heartbreak for the both us as we have decided to end our engagement. We gave this relationship our all and we are saddened that we did not get the fairytale ending we hoped for. We will continue to be there for each other no matter what. This hasn't been an easy decision, however, as we part ways, we do so with lots of love and admiration for each other."
