Rafa Cabrera-Bello got the better of Callum Shinkwin on the first play-off hole to win the Scottish Open at Dundonald.

While playing partner Andy Sullivan struggled, the unheralded Shinkwin showed no signs of nerves, with a run of three birdies from the seventh allowing him to get over a quiet start and move into the lead on 14-under par.

A long iron to the final green left him pin high but chipping over a bunker from a downslope, he fluffed his lines and with a putt to win he left it short to record his first bogey of the day to drop into a play-off.

Cabrera-Bello had set the clubhouse lead at 13-under thanks to a flawless 64 which included eight birdies, one of which came on the last.

The pair returned to the par-five 18th and it was the Spaniard who prevailed, two-putting for a birdie and just like in regulation play Shinkwin again came up short as he attempted to tie.

Sunday's triumph in South Ayrshire marked the 33-year-old's first win since the 2012 Dubai Desert Masters.

France's Matthieu Pavon impressed with a closing 66 to come home third, the same score as Padraig Harrington who shared fourth alongside Ian Poulter and Matt Kuchar amongst others.
