Warrington boss Tony Smith is confident his side are heading in the right direction following Friday's 50-10 win over Leigh.

Wing Tom Lineham took the headlines with his four-try haul against the Super League's bottom club, as the Wire ended a recent run of five defeats in six to improve their slim chances of making the Super 8s.

Smith has seen his position come under scrutiny in recent weeks and admitted he was pleased to see his side's improvement on Friday.

The Australian says he is now confident that they are building their momentum nicely, regardless of which competition they find themselves in during the post-season.

"I thought it was a good all-round performance," said Smith. "Our defence was good – we had to do a bit, particularly early in both halves which was crucial for us defensively.

"The pleasing part tonight was our attack was much improved. We asked some questions and came up with some good answers as well.

He added: "Regardless of whether it’s Super 8s or Middle 8s, it’s important to get that feeling that we can play really good rugby league, to get confidence back there tonight."

Elsewhere on Friday, Mark Percival finished with 14 points as St Helens claimed a 19-12 win over Hull, while Huddersfield ran in seven tries to defeat Widnes 40-0.
