Fernando Alonso has revealed he will wait to hear McLaren's plans for next year's car before deciding on his future with the team.

The 36-year-old two-time Formula 1 world champion has endured a frustrating two-and-a-half seasons back at McLaren since his return from Ferrari ahead of the 2015 season.

That coincided with McLaren reuniting with Japanese engine manufacturer, Honda, in the hope the partnership would bring a repeat of their previous success in the sport.

However, things have not gone to plan with McLaren-Honda failing to challenge and Alonso alone failing to complete six races this season with his best result to date being a sixth place finish.

The Spaniard has hinted on several occasions that he would be looking for a new team at the end of the year, but the likelihood that McLaren will ditch Honda and link up with Renault for 2018 has prevented him from revealing his future plans.

Alonso claims he has several irons in the fire, but will give McLaren every opportunity to show that they will be challenging at the top in the near future.

He said: "Whatever I do next year is because I want to win. I will not be around in any series to be fighting for top 10 or top 15.

"There are many options out there that I’m looking at. Formula One is my first and only priority so I will wait to make a decision on that before making decisions on other series.

"At the same time I want to give time to my team. After the last three years, the struggles we went through together, to have time for them to make decisions, to see the future, next year’s car. And after they take decisions I will take mine."
