Zach Johnson believes his game is well suited to the Open and he is optimistic of challenging for glory next week.

Johnson, who will take part in the John Deere Classic this week in preparation for the third Major of the season, has not been in scintillating form this year and a tie for sixth at the Sony Open in Hawaii is his best result so far.

The American missed the cut at the Travelers Championship last time out while his performances in the first two of the 'big four' events this term have been less than inspiring.

He failed to make the weekend’s play at the Masters in April - a tournament he won back in 2007 - before the 41-year-old only managed a tie for 27th at the US Open.

However, despite not being in great form, the Iowa-born star has a good record at the Open, having lifted the Claret Jug in 2015 and recorded another five top-20 finishes.

Johnson, who will be jetting over to Scotland from America on Sunday night, is looking forward to the event at Royal Birkdale next week and is feeling positive of making a serious push for glory.

"I think my game is suited to it, just the overall basis, the foundation is suited to it. I don't feel like I really have to overly prepare," he was quoted as saying by sport24.

"Quality shots get rewarded no matter what golf course you play. Over there, the wind, the other elements that are involved, play a huge role in that. Actually probably a little bit more luck in that tournament sometimes based on tee times."
