Matt Kuchar says he is "excited" about the prospect of hunting down Jordan Spieth on Sunday at the Open.

The American heads into the closing 18 at Royal Birkdale three behind his compatriot and looking to claim his maiden major title.

Spieth has already won both the Masters and US Open but has not claimed a major since squandering a five-shot lead on the back nine at Augusta in 2016.

At 39, Kuchar is playing in his 12th Open Championship and has fond memories of Birkdale, having made his first appearance in the tournament at the venue back in 1998.

The four-time Ryder Cup player says he is looking forward to the final round and is confident he can finally add a major to his trophy haul.

"I am excited to be in the position I'm in," said Kuchar. "Three shots off the lead, I've got a great chance with a good day to win the Claret Jug.

"There aren't many other players in the field, even if they have a great final day, who can say that."
