Movember: when the mustache is militant ...

After Pink Month, breast cancer early awareness month, here is Movember, the month to change the look on men's health . The name of the operation is the contraction of "Mo" for Mustache and "November", November in English. The initiative was born in Australia 14 years ago, under the impetus of a group of friends: in Melbourne in 2003, they are 30 to let their mustache grow. Objective: to warn that men often pay less attention to their health than women . Yet they too have specificities like prostate cancer or testicles. Since the movement spread: in 2013 there were 1.1 million participants in 21 countries. In France, it is already the 6th edition of Movember. In 2015, 22,000 people (Mo Bros and Mo Sistas) participated in Movember (compared to 5300 in 2012) and raised € 485,000 donated to Movember's global action plan .

Then during the whole month that follows, the nature takes again its rights: it is to let grow a mustache. Of all possible forms (without joining the favorites or the chin). The idea is to draw attention to this attribute hair to stimulate discussion. All means are good: the "Mo Bros" (the men participating in the operation) give news of their mustache via posts on Facebook, Twitter or their Mo Space, a dedicated space on the site of Movember.com and incite their afficionados to make donations there. They can also take part in a MOVE challenge (marathon, hula hoop, crossfit ....) or organize or attend a Movember event (concert, party, pétanque competition ...). All in the idea of raising funds. Note that since 2016, when we make a donation to Movember, we can now benefit from a tax reduction (66%). And women during Movember ? We can advertise the operation, on the net or social networks but also in real life, around and register on the site of Movember to become a "Mo Sista " and we can participate in the challenge Move with men for example.

Movember: zooming on a widespread cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common among men : in 2011, more than 71,000 cases were recorded in France. It is the 4 th leading cause of cancer mortality (8685 person / years). It must be said that there are several barriers to screening : men are reluctant to consult and are afraid of castrating surgery. Yet early detection allows treatment as early and less heavy. It is based on two elements: a rectal examination and a laboratory assay of PSA , an antigen made by the prostate and whose increase reflects a possible prostatic dysfunction (but with age the PSA rate also increases naturally). Nevertheless in recent years, this screening has been questioned for the greatest number because it sometimes leads to overtreatment. It remains relevant in the presence of symptoms such as the difficulty to urinate or urine dash or blood in sperm or risk factors (being over 50, family history ...).
