Garbine Muguruza's coach Conchita Martinez believes the new Wimbledon champion has the potential to become world number one.

The Spaniard captured her second Grand Slam title on Saturday with an impressive straight-sets win over Venus Williams, the 14th seed getting over the line with aplomb as she won nine successive games en route to her 7-5 6-0 triumph.

The 23-year-old's success might have come as something of a surprise, the 14th seed having struggled to build on her victory at the French Open last year, Muguruza failing to make it beyond the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam since her maiden major title.

Having lost 6-1 6-0 at Eastbourne in the build-up to Wimbledon, consistency would appear to be an issue for Muguruza, who only dropped one set at Wimbledon on her way to lifting the Rosewater Dish.

Her All England Club success is expected to boost Muguruza's ranking up 10 places to fifth and her coach, the 1994 Wimbledon champion, believes more titles and top spot in WTA standings is on the cards.

Martinez told Sportsweek: "She has the potential and she can win more.

"She is very happy with her game. She beat the world number one, Kerber, and she can go all the way."

Meanwhile, Muguruza admits she has found it tough to bring her game together since her French Open title and was delighted it clicked at Wimbledon as she erased memories of her 2015 final defeat to Serena Williams.

She said: "It is very hard to find a recipe to feel good fitness-wise, tennistically, mentally. I think in this tournament I put everything together, which is very hard.

"Normally you're tired, I feel pain here, my confidence is not there. So I felt this tournament I find somehow to put everything together and perform good at every level."
