James O'Connor is confident he can put his past misdemeanours behind him when he begins the new chapter in his career at Sale.

The Australian utility-back has been plagued by disciplinary issues over the years and his problems have led to his off-field exploits overshadowing his outstanding talent.

With him not having a central contract since 2015, O'Connor has spent the last two years with Toulon and is preparing for a second stint in England, this time with Sale.

Sharks boss Steve Diamond is known for being a no-nonsense character and is unlikely to tolerate any further disciplinary issues.

However, the 27-year-old insists this will not be a problem as he feels he has learned from his mistakes and is determined to prove he has grown up once he returns from his current ankle injury.

"If you're going to live like that, you're going to have a low quality of life," said O'Connor. "It is what it is and I can't change anyone's opinion on me save only through actions.

"I am only trying to live in the now and not focus too much about what's going to happen in six months.

"I am just trying to get my ankle right [he has had an operation but should be fit in a fortnight] and enjoying the company of the boys."
