Summer is finally here! Beaches, walks and other joys of this summer period are to be expected. But when we have toddlers, protecting their skin is our priority. And that is not always easy, because yes, they do not always want to spread sunscreen every 2 hours. However, to avoid sunburn, to protect their sun capital, it is essential to protect their child. Nivea was also amused to place a toboggan that diffuses sunscreen in South Africa for a commercial. But we must be able to trust children's sunscreens ... The UFC Que Choisir consumer association has tested 17 sun protection products 50 and 50 for children and the finding is far from reassuring. Whether it's in the form of sprays, creams or sun lotion, children's solar products tested do not protect our toddlers enough.
The enemy of sunscreen: UVA
The tested products display reassuring labels:
- UVA logo to prove the effectiveness of ultraviolet protection
- the words "High protection" and "Very high protection"
Are all these labeling statements true? UFC What to choose has doubts ...
However, we start with good news, the 17 solar products tested play their role of protector against UVB (responsible for sunburn). But concerning UVA (contributing in particular to the development of skin cancer or photo-aging), nearly 1 cream out of 3 tested has a very insufficient protection against UVA 5 creams (including major brands) that do not offer the minimum protection required by the European authorities.
And the bio in all this? The "organic" sun creams tested do not protect UVAs either. Of the 5 children's solar products tested, 3 offer very poor protection . These creams based on natural ingredients use mineral-based anti-UV screens, revealing for some, not enough effective against UVA.
UFC-Que Choisir has announced that it is filing a complaint against five laboratories that manufacture these products for "deceptive marketing and deception". Some laboratories have in the wake, announced that they also brought a complaint against the consumer association.
Well protect your child, what works
To protect children from the sun's harmful rays, we continue to follow these recommendations:
- put a hat on your child and a pair of sunglasses and do not hesitate to leave it in a t-shirt
- avoid exposing them to the sun between 12h and 16h
- brush your child with 50 or 50 sunscreen every 2 hours
-hydrate it as often as possible
