Jolyon Palmer says it would have been nice if Renault had kept him on for next season but understands why he has been replaced.
The Brit is looking for a new home after losing his seat with the French manufacturer for the 2018 campaign after they decided to take Carlos Sainz on loan from Red Bull to partner German Nico Hulkenberg.
Renault's decision means Palmer will bring the curtain down on his stint with the team following the final six races of the season and the 26-year-old is aiming to use the conclusion of the season to impress prospective employers.
A run of 15 races without scoring a point has proven to be the deciding factor for Palmer, who finally got some points on the board last time out in Singapore, two days after learning he had lost his seat.
The 26-year-old says he can understand why Renault decided to make a change after such a long scoreless run and is now aiming to impress prospective employers with a potential opening at Williams as rumours over Felipe Massa's future continue to circulate.
"I've got a car that can score points and I am focused on doing the best job that I can," Palmer told ESPN. "I would have loved it if the team had signed me for next year but with the way that the season has gone it is understandable that it has not happened. It has been a tough year all round.
"I want to go out with my head held high and prove I can do the job. At the end of the day the decision has been made so I've got six races to do what I can and I've got the kit to do the job."
