Julian Savea says he will stay with the Hurricanes because it's the best place for him to be in order to win back an All Blacks berth.

Savea has a break clause in his contract, which runs through to 2019, that enables him to leave the Wellington-based Super Rugby franchise mid-way through his four-year New Zealand Rugby deal if he wished.

The Chiefs, who like the Hurricanes were losing semi-finalists this summer, were rumoured to be keen on offering the 54-test veteran a change of scenery.

Savea was dropped to the bench during the Hurricanes playoffs run in the past two campaigns, which then saw him lose his place in Steve Hansen's All Blacks squad.

But, in a personal appearance on Tuesday, Savea said he was staying with the Hurricanes and that Wellington has always been his home.

"I've decided to stay with the Hurricanes," he said. "With everything that's been going on over the past year I know in my heart that's the best place to get my rugby back.

"I weighed up everything. I know in my heart this is home. There's family and we're just about to have a kid. Regardless if I did decide to go anywhere I still needed to perform well."

Savea was tempted by a move to Waikato Stadium, where he would almost certainly have started after James Lowe left the Chiefs.

But he added: "When you have that option it definitely is. I put a lot of things on the table. There was only one other franchise I was looking at. I know if any team is going to help me get back to the best it is the Hurricanes."
