Henrik Stenson says he has hit form just at the right time after clinching the Wyndham Championship.

Stenson, who prior to the tournament had not won since lifting the 2016 Open Championship, went into the final day at Sedgefield Country Club with a one-shot lead and he made the most of that slender advantage.

The Swedish star made eight birdies and two bogeys to sign for a six-under-par 64 and that was enough to clinch victory by a single stroke from American Ollie Schniederjans, who also carded a round of 64.

With the FedEx Cup play-offs getting underway this week at the Northern Trust Open, the 41-year-old knows how important it is to be in form leading into the season-ending events and he is hopeful of challenging for glory.

"It's certainly a good time to start firing," he was quoted as saying by pgatour.com. "We know the kind of damage you can do during the Playoffs when the points are up to four times the normal season, right, so if you get hot and keep on playing well, certainly a chance to challenge for the overall.

"It's the first step, and delighted to get a win this year."

American Webb Simpson finished in third on -18 after a round of 67 whilst compatriots Kevin Na and Ryan Armour, and South African Rory Sabbatini, were a further stroke back.

Irishman Shane Lowry was the highest-placed European, finishing in a three-way tie for seventh on -15, whilst 2015 champion Davis Love III ended the tournament on -14.
