Sweden's Henrik Stenson produced a bogey-free 62 to stay within a shot of the lead after the first round of the Wyndham Championship.

The 2016 Open Champion was in fine form on Thursday as he struck eight birdies at Sedgefield Country Club.

That performance allowed him to move one behind early pacesetter Matt Every who eventually finished on nine-under par.

The 2011 champion Webb Simpson is in a share of third on seven-under and he is tied with Cameron Smith, Vaughn Taylor, Tim Wilkinson, Brian Campbell, Harold Varner III and Sam Saunders.

Stenson had looked set for a 59 round but he missed his birdie putt at the 15th, although the 41-year-old was still pleased with his first-round display.

He told Sky Sports: "I hit a lot of good shots out there. There were plenty of birdies, so it was a good day."
