Defending champion Anthony Wall produced a final-hole birdie to progress through the opening round of the Paul Lawrie Match Play.

Wall defeat Alex Noren in the final 12 months ago and moved one step closer to retaining his title by beating Sam Walker.

His birdied allowed him to seal a 1up win over Walker at the Golf Resort Bad Griesbach and the Englishman will now take on Haydn Porteous in the last-32.

Both Wall and Walker pushed each other all the way on Thursday and the former admitted it was tough going.

"I just managed to keep hold of him and it was difficult and I got my chance at the last and made three, so that was fantastic," Wall told Sky Sports.

"If you've done something in that field before once or twice you can draw from that and if you have those nervous patches you can go 'I've done it before, why can't I do it again?'"

Porteous progressed after beating Gregory Havret 2&1, while top seed Matthew Southgate beat Romain Wattel.

Welshman Jamie Donaldson fired home three birdies in four holes to beat Paul Peterson 2&1, but Richie Ramsay is out after losing 3&2 to Tom Lewis.
