How does the impedance meter work?
Today, new technologies are everywhere, especially ... in our scales! The principle is simple: when you put your feet on your scale impedancemètre, an electric current of very low intensity runs your body from the feet to the head, in order to estimate your fat mass. This current is of course safe, although the device is not recommended if you wear a pacemaker.
If the current passes very easily through the muscular tissue, it is otherwise with the fat: this one opposes it a resistance. This is how the balance impedance meter can measure the share of different types of fat present in your body.
A classic scale indicates your weight, but in no way can you determine if you are underweight, overweight or - lucky! -, your body is well balanced. Indeed, it does not take into account the weight of your frame or your muscle mass. And that changes everything! You should know that a kilo of muscle is much less bulky than a kilogram of fat. Two people can weigh the same weight, make the same size, and present two totally different silhouettes.
What is an impedance meter used for?
Thanks to the impedance meter scale, you can determine if your body fat is problematic and to what extent. This is indicated as a percentage by the device. According to WHO (World Health Organization), if you are a woman between the ages of 20 and 39, your body fat should ideally be between 21 and 33% of your total weight. From 40 to 59 years, it should increase slightly to between 23 and 34%. A woman between the ages of 20 and 39 is considered to be obese if her body fat level exceeds 39%.
