While every year, 600,000 tons of clothing are thrown in France, the French government has just presented a series of measures to stimulate the circular economy and put an end to this grievous waste. Unveiled at the turn of an indicative roadmap, the 15th proposal of this new action plan announces the prohibition to throw or destroy unsold textile products by 2019. The solution? Compel all sales areas of more than 400m2 to donate to charities, like the device set up by the law on food waste.

A victory for Emmaus

"For now, nothing is really clear, it's a roadmap presentation, but it's good news. The deadline of 2019 will allow the government to launch an inventory of the situation, calculate the number of discarded tonnages, processes set up by the marks, the difficulties ... "commented Valerie Beech, the Assistant Director General of Emmaus, the Novethic online magazine.

This announcement marks the culmination of Emmaus ' fight, as the anti-poverty association has repeatedly alerted the government to this problem. And for good reason, in early 2018, a video showing products of the brand Celio, lacerated and thrown in the trash, had not failed to create excitement in the public opinion, the scandal occurring three weeks after broadcast on the airwaves of a report claiming that H & M has burned nearly 12 tons of clothing since 2013. For the moment, no brand has wanted to respond to government announcements. To be continued.
