Don Manfredi's comeback from a serious knee injury has been cut short after he suffered a minor setback on his return for Wigan.
The winger has not featured for the Warriors in the last 12 months due to injury but appeared close to making his comeback when being named in the line-up for the reserves on Saturday.
However, the 23-year-old failed to finish the match and has been sent for a scan to determine the extent of the problem which forced him from the field early.
Head coach Shaun Wane has described the injury as a slight tweak but even if the setback is not serious, it now appears unlikely Manfredi will feature for the reigning Super League champions this season as the campaign heads in to the home straight.
Meanwhile, Wigan are hopeful Joel Tomkins will be passed fit for the Challenge Cup final against Hull FC on August 26 having returned to training this week.
The forward has been out of action since the Challenge Cup semi-final win over Salford due to a groin injury and while Friday's Super 8s encounter with the Red Devils will come too soon, Wane hopes he might feature at Wembley.
"Joel ran today, I don’t think he’ll be fit for Salford but he should be okay for the following week," Wane told Wigan Today.
