Renault have insisted there is no chance of Robert Kubica driving for the team this year ahead of his test at the Hungaroring.

The French outfit are thought to be giving serious consideration to replacing Jolyon Palmer as one of their drivers given his struggles this year - the Brit has failed to score a point in the first half of the season.

The announcement that Kubica would then drive this year's car in Hungary next week only added fuel to the speculation that Renault are planning to bring in the Pole to succeed Palmer.

Renault managing director Cyril Abiteboul has now dismissed the rumours Kubica could replace Palmer this year, claiming the test is to evaluate whether the former Sauber driver could potentially compete in F1 in 2018.

"We continue to support Jo and there is absolutely no change of plan," Abiteboul told Autosport. "It is true that with Robert we feel we need to investigate a little bit further after all the tests we have done.

"We want to have a closer look about how realistic it would be for Robert to drive again in a modern F1 car, and possibly into a racing context.

"The last opportunity to at least do the test in a modern F1 car was the Hungary test, and we are taking that opportunity."

Abiteboul added that even if Kubica drove well that would not guarantee him a spot at Renault next year, claiming he is one of a couple of candidates for a race seat.
