Toto Wolff claims it is "dangerous" to believe Mercedes are favourites to win the Belgian Grand Prix because the track suits their car.
The Silver Arrows chief has spoken out ahead of Formula 1's return this weekend following a near month-long summer break, as the reigning constructors' champions bid to stretch their lead over rivals Ferrari after the Scuderia's one-two finish in Hungary last time out cut the gap to just 39 points.
Wolff accepts that Spa-Francorchamps "is a circuit where aerodynamic efficiency is extremely important" and should play into his team's hands, but he does not want any complacency to creep in given the threat of both Ferrari and Red Bull.
He added: "Assumptions are dangerous - we have seen too many times already this season that the form book can be rewritten from one weekend to the next.
"From what we have seen in the first half of the season, the competitive balance will swing one way and another from circuit to circuit. Red Bull will be a threat if they can build on the performance they showed in Hungary.
"So we need to keep our heads down, stay humble regarding our strengths, diligent about our weaknesses, and take the season weekend by weekend. The motivation and determination in the factory are greater than ever."
Lewis Hamilton will hope Spa does help Mercedes as he targets the legendary Michael Schumacher’s record of 68 pole positions in what is his 200th Grand Prix, while the three-time world champion is also looking to cut Sebastian Vettel's current 14-point lead at the top of the drivers' standings.
