Wigan Warriors boss Shaun Wane has criticised his side's display as they lost 32-0 to Wakefield on Saturday.
The Warriors knew they needed to win by 90 points to reach the top four, but Wakefield recorded a superb victory.
Wigan were nilled by Trinity for the second time in three visits to Belle Vue and it ensured Wigan finished sixth in the Super League table.
By dropping down from fifth they lost out on £25,000 more spending money and Wane insists his players deserved to miss out.
He told Wigan Today: "We were way below our standards, there are no excuses. It was not not good enough.
"We played like it was a pre-season game. At the minute I am fuming but in two weeks time, in the cold light of day, I need to re-check myself.
"We’ve won a World Club, got to a final, nearly got to the semis... but we’ve had too many bad spells, with the injuries, no club would have dealt with what we’ve dealt with."
